TORONTO – The Albany Devils scored four unanswered goals to force overtime and come out on top with a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Marlies Saturday at Ricoh Coliseum. Yohann Auvitu netted the overtime winner after Ben Sexton scored back to back goals in the final three minutes of the third period to force the extra frame. Albany’s record improves to 28-20-1-1. Toronto’s record moves to 22-21-3-1.
Eric Faille got Toronto on the board first at 2:57 of the first period with a wraparound shot to slip the puck past Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood. Byron Froese scored the Marlies’ second goal at 11:58 on a breakaway. Travis Dermott added to the lead, scoring a one timer from the near side circle at 15:50 of the first.
With a late first period push, Petr Straka was able to get one past Antoine Bibeau through traffic in front of the net with just 41 seconds remaining in the first frame. Jacob MacDonald and Blake Coleman picked up the assists.
At 17:33 of the second period, Justin Holl was able to give the Marlies a 4-1 lead with a shorthanded goal.
The Devils responded when Kevin Rooney fed Jan Mandat a pass that Mandat was able to push past Bibeau at 18:44 of the second. Straka picked up the second assist on the power play tally.
In the third, Sexton scored at 17:01 to make the score 4-3 with a shot from the near-side circle, slipping one past Bibeau. John Quenneville and Vojtech Mozik picked up the assists. With 35.8 seconds remaining in regulation, Sexton netted his second of the night after crashing the net and redirecting a Blake Coleman shot. Nick Lappin picked up the second assist.
Lappin fed Auvitu the game winning goal after being pressured in the Marlies’ zone to end the game at 4:11 of the overtime period.
Blackwood saved 33 of 37 shots and improves his record to 9-7-2-0. Bibeau stopped 40 of 45 shots and moves his record to 8-10-5-3.
The Devils and Marlies face off Sunday at Ricoh Coliseum for a 3 pm puck drop.
